Decentralized Energy Generation Using Hydrogen-Containing Gases<\/h2>\n

Hydrogen-containing gases include, for example, coking gas, coal mine gas<\/a>, and gases from the gasification of biomass<\/a>. Their composition\u2014and in particular the proportions of hydrogen and methane\u2014can vary depending on their source and production process.<\/p>\n

For the use of hydrogen-containing gases in CHP plants, MWM gas engines can be adapted to the respective gas composition and the required operating conditions. Depending on the gas composition, different engine configurations and safety devices are used.<\/p>\n

Hydrogen as an Energy Carrier: Different Production Methods<\/h2>\n

Hydrogen can be used as an energy carrier for electricity and heat generation, as a raw material for industrial processes, and as a feedstock for other energy carriers. The greenhouse gas emissions associated with its production depend largely on the production method and the energy sources used in the process.<\/p>\n

Green hydrogen<\/strong> is produced by electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable energy sources. The electrolysis process itself does not generate any direct CO2<\/sub> emissions.<\/p>\n

Blue hydrogen<\/strong> is typically produced from natural gas. A portion of the CO\u2082 generated during production is captured and permanently stored (Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS).<\/p>\n

Turquoise hydrogen<\/strong> is produced through methane pyrolysis. In this process, methane is thermally broken down into hydrogen and solid carbon.<\/p>\n

Gray hydrogen<\/strong> is typically produced from natural gas via steam reforming. The CO2<\/sub> generated during this process is not captured and stored, but rather released into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Hydrogen Blending in MWM Gas Engines<\/h2>\n

Depending on the series, model, and operating conditions, suitable MWM gas engines can be operated with a defined hydrogen content in the fuel gas. For certain MWM gas engines, hydrogen blending of up to 10% by volume is possible without technical modifications.<\/p>\n

For hydrogen blends of up to 25% by volume, technical modifications are required for suitable model series. MWM offers corresponding retrofit solutions<\/a> for existing plants of selected model series.<\/p>\n

\"Gas
\nMWM uses the “Hydrogen Power<\/a>” label to identify gas engines that are designed or modified for operation with a hydrogen blend of up to 25% by volume. With gas engines and retrofit solutions for hydrogen blends, MWM expands the fuel options for suitable new and existing plants.<\/p>\n
