Knocking occurs when an unintentional second combustion takes place alongside the first. This results in pressure spikes that put a strain on the engine. This can damage the pistons, connecting rods, and crankshaft. To prevent damage, the engine control system intervenes. Causes of engine knocking can include an incorrectly set ignition timing, hot components inside the combustion chamber, or deposits in the intake system.
