During the hot summer months, these operations are faced with new challenges. High temperatures require longer and more efficient air-conditioning to ensure that operations are not disrupted. Combined cooling, heat, and power (CCHP) plants offer a reliable solution to this challenge. They generate cooling using adsorption or absorption chillers. The key advantage of CCHP plants over air-conditioning systems that run solely on electricity is that they generate cooling using waste heat instead of consuming electricity for this purpose. This significantly reduces the electricity required for temperature control and thus the operating costs at production facilities equipped with CCHP plants. Moreover, combined heat and power (CHP) generation enables a much higher overall efficiency than separate energy generation. Thus, a CHP plant can achieve a total efficiency of up to 90 percent, whereas in the separate generation of heat and power, the heat produced during power generation often goes unused. Accordingly, a large portion of the waste heat goes unused when generating cooling, heat, and power separately. CCHP plants reuse the waste heat from the engines to power an adsorption or absorption chiller, which uses that heat to generate cold for air-conditioning systems or cooling processes.<\/p>\n<h2>Avoiding Electrical Peak Loads Helps Stabilize the Power Grid<\/h2>\n<p>Gas engine-powered CCHP systems not only generate heat, power, and cooling directly on site in a flexible manner, they also help reduce costly electricity load spikes that occur with conventional electric air-conditioning systems, particularly during heat waves. The cold is generated thermally from the waste heat of the gas engines. Only the pumps and recooling units are powered by electricity. As a result, significantly less electrical energy is required for cooling than when cooling, heat, and power are generated separately.
