For the first time, ETW Energietechnik, a German MWM partner specialized in energy plants, has installed a natural gas cogeneration power plant with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. The fully automated SCR system greatly reduces exhaust fume and nitrogen emissions. The installation by order of Stadtwerke Duisburg AG comprises three CHP plants with MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas engines<\/a>, each of which has a capacity of 999 kWel<\/sub>.<\/p>\n

Stadtwerke Duisburg Becomes First Operator of Low-Emission Cogeneration Power Plants with Innovative AdBlue Technology<\/h2>\n

Two of the CHP plants with significantly reduced nitrogen emissions, which have been installed by ETW, have already been running in test mode at the Duisburg Center and Duisburg South locations since late 2017. A third one of these highly efficient, low-emission cogeneration power plants<\/a> will also go live on the energy supplier’s premises in Duisburg South, but probably only in mid-2019. Thanks to a smart heat utilization concept, which is based on a second installed exhaust heat exchanger stage and utilization of heat from the mixture cooling circuit, all three CHP (combined heat and power) plants achieve an excellent overall efficiency of 94 percent.<\/p>\n

With the fully automated turnkey SCR system including urea injection (Adblue), the MWM gas engines<\/a> reflect the state of the art and remain significantly below all currently required emission limits.<\/p>\n

Distributed Energy Generation at a New Level: Environmental Standards of Tomorrow Complied with Even Now<\/h2>\n

The Technical Instruction on Air Quality Control (TA-Luft) version of 2002 defines limits of 500 mg nitrogen oxide, 300 mg carbon monoxide, and 30 mg of formaldehyde per standard cubic meter. The amendment to TA-Luft of 2017 has been submitted, but has not been adopted so far. It contains stricter limits, which the CHP plants in Duisburg already comply with. Currently, the emissions of the cogeneration plant with SCR and Adblue technology reach less than 100 mg nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide and less than 20 mg formaldehyde per standard cubic meter. The expert team of MWM partner ETW Energietechnik believes that the emission limits stipulated in the 2017 amendment will soon be approved and become mandatory for all cogeneration power plants following a transition period. Accordingly, they recommend installing SCR emission control and Adblue in all systems.<\/p>\n
