MWM Hydrogen Power
Hydrogen for Decentralized Energy Generation
Hydrogen (H2) can be used in various sectors as an energy carrier and industrial raw material. The production process and the energy sources used in it are particularly relevant to its greenhouse gas footprint.
Hydrogen can also be used as a component of fuel gas in decentralized energy generation. MWM develops gas engines and retrofit solutions for operation with defined hydrogen content, thereby expanding the range of applications for suitable new and existing plants.
Methods of Hydrogen Production
The greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and supply of hydrogen vary depending on the production process and the energy sources used.
Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable energy sources. No direct CO2 emissions are generated during the electrolysis process.
Blue hydrogen is typically produced from natural gas. The resulting CO2 is partially captured and stored (Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS). The actual greenhouse gas balance depends on the specific production and supply process.
For more information on production methods and hydrogen-containing gases, see “Gas Containing Hydrogen”.
Technical Requirements for the Use of Hydrogen in Gas Engines
The properties of hydrogen differ from those of conventional gaseous fuels in several respects and must be taken into account when designing gas engines. These include, among other things, a wide flammability range, low ignition energy, and potential effects on certain materials.
MWM investigates these properties as part of its engine development and takes the resulting requirements into account when designing hydrogen-compatible engine variants and retrofit solutions.

MWM Gas Engines for Fuel Gases Containing Hydrogen
MWM has project experience with fuel gases containing varying hydrogen concentrations. In customer projects, MWM products and technologies have already been used with gas mixtures containing up to 60 percent hydrogen. The requirements for engine configuration and operation depend, among other factors, on the hydrogen content, gas composition, engine series, and operating conditions.
Depending on the engine series and model, suitable MWM gas engines can be operated with a defined hydrogen content in the fuel gas. For certain configurations, a hydrogen blend of up to 10% by volume is supported without additional technical modifications.
For selected model series, solutions are available for hydrogen blends of up to 25% by volume. Depending on the engine and system configuration, corresponding technical adjustments are required for this.

MWM uses the “Hydrogen Power” label to identify engine variants and solutions designed for operation with a hydrogen content of up to 25% by volume in the fuel gas. The permissible hydrogen blend varies depending on the series, technical configuration, and operating conditions. For existing cogeneration power plants MWM also offers retrofit kits to enable hydrogen admixture.
MWM Gas Engines for New and Replacement Investments
For selected MWM series, engine variants are available for operation with natural gas and a hydrogen blend of up to 25% by volume. Depending on the specific technical configuration, these include the TCG 3016, TCG 3020, and TCG 2032 series.
This allows corresponding new and replacement systems to be designed from the outset for operation with a defined hydrogen content.
Retrofit Solutions for Existing MWM Systems
MWM offers 25H2 retrofit kits for compatible existing systems in the TCG 3016, TCG 3020, and TCG 2032 series. Depending on the specific engine and system configuration, these kits enable operation with a hydrogen blend of up to 25% by volume.
The required components and modifications depend on the series, model, and operating conditions of the specific system.
